A mid-Holocene transition in the nitrogen dynamics of the western equatorial Pacific: Evidence of a deepening thermocline? ArchiMer
Kienast, M.; Lehmann, M. F.; Timmermann, A.; Galbraith, E.; Bolliet, T.; Holboum, A.; Normandeau, C.; Laj, C..
Sedimentary delta(15)N records from the oligotrophic western equatorial Pacific (WEP) off Mindanao show that late Holocene sedimentary delta(15)N is substantially lower than that of the early Holocene, following a gradual >3 parts per thousand decrease that occurred between 7 and 3 kyrs ago. Analyses of modem day nitrate isotope profiles from the same region indicate the sensitivity of the WEP N pools towards (1) the advection of (15)N-enriched nitrate from the Eastern Equatorial Pacific (EEP) by the North Equatorial Current (NEC) and the Mindanao Current in subsurface waters and, (2) at shallow depths, the input of new and (15)N-depleted nitrate through N, fixation. We suggest that the Holocene decrease in sedimentary delta(15)N reflects a diminished...

Monsoon variability and deep oceanic circulation in the western equatorial Pacific over the last climatic cycle: Insights from sedimentary magnetic properties and sortable silt ArchiMer
Kissel, Catherine; Laj, Carlo; Kienast, Markus; Bolliet, Timothe; Holbourn, Ann; Hill, Paul; Kuhnt, Wolfgang; Braconnot, Pascale.
Magnetic and grain size properties of a sediment core located in the western equatorial Pacific, off the southeastern tip of the Philippine island of Mindanao, are presented in an effort to reconstruct past changes in the East Asian Monsoon and deep ocean circulation during the last 160 kyrs. The sedimentary concentration of magnetic particles, interpreted to reflect past changes in runoff from Mindanao, varies almost in antiphase with Northern Hemisphere insolation. This suggests that precipitation was lower in the western equatorial Pacific region during boreal insolation maxima and thus corroborates model results showing opposing trends in precipitation between land and the marine realm there. Variations in the grain size distribution of the inorganic...

New records, names and combinations of scaly tree ferns (Cyatheaceae) in eastern Malesia Naturalis
Coritico, F.P.; Amoroso, V.B.; Lehnert, M..
Several scaly tree ferns (Cyatheaceae) from eastern Malesia are transferred from Cyathea s.lat. to other genera: Alsophila roroka from Sulawesi; Alsophila lamoureuxii from New Guinea; Alsophila binayana, A. bisquamata, A. mapahuwensis, A. murkelensis, A. ohaensis, and Sphaeropteris pukuana from Seram. A new name is chosen for Cyathea coriacea, Alsophila katoi, which here is first reported for the Vogelkop Peninsula, New Guinea. Alsophila commutata, a tree fern with branched trunks, is first reported from the Philippines, expanding its original distribution from the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and Borneo. A detailed and revised diagnostic description of this species is provided and a second-step lectotype is chosen.

The first record of the boreal bog species Drosera rotundifolia (Droseraceae) from the Philippines, and a key to the Philippine sundews Naturalis
Coritico, F.P.; Fleischmann, A..
Drosera rotundifolia, a species of the temperate Northern Hemisphere with a disjunct occurrence in high montane West Papua, has been discovered in a highland peat bog on Mt Limbawon, Pantaron Range, Bukidnon on the island of Mindanao, Philippines, which mediates to the only other known tropical, Southern Hemisphere location in New Guinea and the closest known northern populations in southern Japan and south-eastern China. A dichotomous key to the seven Drosera species of the Philippines is given, and distribution maps are provided.
